ScaledPapers vs Checkly

Checkly is synthetic monitoring for engineering teams: API checks plus full Playwright browser checks, priced as code-first modules — Detect (monitoring), Communicate (status pages/dashboards), and Resolve (AI diagnostics), each billed separately. The free Hobby plan includes 10 uptime monitors, 1,000 browser runs, and a public status page with 20 services and 250 subscribers.

ScaledPapers is a smaller, simpler tool: HTTP/API, DNS, and TCP checks, incidents, and status pages with a REST API. It does not do browser (Playwright) checks, and it has one product bill — free.

Where ScaledPapers fits

You want monitoring and customer communication in one free product without assembling modules. ScaledPapers' checks run every 60 seconds from 5 Americas regions, failures publish to your status page automatically, and the Checks API is included free. There is one bill ($0) and one console.

Checkly is the stronger engineering tool — Playwright browser checks catch broken flows a 200-status ping can't, and the Terraform/CLI workflow suits platform teams. But its Communicate module bills separately: custom domains start at $9/mo, custom CSS and incident management need the Team plan, and running Detect + Communicate together means two module subscriptions.

Where Checkly fits

Checkly fits product engineers who monitor user journeys — login flows, checkout, API-plus-browser combos — and want them in CI and production with code-first tooling (CLI, Terraform, CI triggers). Its free Hobby plan is generous for testing the waters, and the modular pricing lets you pay for status pages separately from monitoring.

Choose Checkly when browser-level synthetic checks are the requirement. Choose ScaledPapers when a free status page fed by simple HTTP checks is the goal — and note ScaledPapers' public pages include incident history and subscriptions on the free plan, which Checkly gates behind custom domains/CSS tiers.
